Maggie Grey's book, 'Dissolvable Delights', majors on water-soluble materials. New ways of using basic water-soluble film and paper extend the use of your store cupboard stash. Fabulous cuffs (see above right), bags and panels are produced when film is combined with paper, metal and stitch. The film also acts as a support for other fabrics and a series of small purses are used to illustrate a raft of mixed media techniques that can be extended in many ways. The book includes ideas for rusting, casting, shaping, fringing and much more.

Other materials that Maggie includes in these techniques can often be replaced by the recycled variety: metal shim makes a great surface but purée tubes or soft drinks cans can be substituted. Embossing powders combine with materials found in the stash. Who knew that black plastic rubbish bags could become rich metallic surfaces?
